Steven Goldberg is a partner at Russ August & Kabat, where he practices in the litigation department.

Mr. Goldberg is well-known for his experience in entertainment, real estate, securities, business tort, employment, insurance coverage, and bad faith litigation, as well as partnership and intra-corporate disputes, antitrust, copyright and trademark infringement litigation.

Mr. Goldberg has represented former and present professional athletes including Jerry West, Mitch Kupchak, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, Brent Barry, Stacey Augmon, B.J. Armstrong, Nomar Garciaparra, Mark Langston, Rex Hudler, Tom O'Malley, and Sean Douglass.

Mr. Goldberg's significant cases include:

  • Representation of South Beverly Park Homeowners Association and the residents of South Beverly Park, including Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Zanuck, Louise Taper and Michael Solomon, in a real estate dispute against the North Beverly Park Homeowners Association. Mr. Goldberg's clients prevailed on their claims after trial. See LA Times Article, LA Business Journal Article.
  • A recent dispute involving a judgment for $107 million in which he successfully obtained an order freezing the assets of the well-known record producer Marion "Suge" Knight and Death Row Records both of whom were forced into bankruptcy shortly thereafter. See Article.
  • Defense of the former CEO of a public company who was sued for securities violations and charged with more than $50 million in damages. Mr. Goldberg's client was completely exonerated of all allegations and prevailed in a counterclaim for more than $1 million, including the recovery of one hundred percent of his legal fees.
  • Representation of a public figure in a defamation action, where Mr. Goldberg's client prevailed in a jury trial and was awarded compensatory and punitive damages.

Mr. Goldberg routinely represents customers, stock brokers and brokerage firms in securities arbitrations and represents banks in loan participation litigation regarding troubled real estate projects. For example, Mr. Goldberg presently represents tennis legend Tracy Austin and her husband in a securities arbitration against Citigroup Global Markets, Inc., and their former broker. See Article.

In a related area, Mr. Goldberg has represented individuals and companies in securities fraud litigation, including class actions and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigations. In this capacity, Mr. Goldberg has represented senior executives and board members of public companies in Rule l0b-5 class actions and SEC investigations.

Other significant representations include:

  • Contract and antitrust litigation for a home shopping television production company.
  • Defense of a hip-hop music producer in copyright infringement litigation.
  • Representation of a California bank against underwriters at Lloyd's of London in an insurance bad faith matter in which the client obtained a jury verdict in excess of $5 million.
  • Representation of law firms and attorneys involved in partnership dissolution disputes.
  • Defense of several California banks against wrongful termination lawsuits brought by former executives.
  • Defense of financial institutions against lender liability claims.
  • Representation of hedge funds against claims by limited partners.

Mr. Goldberg studied mathematics at Harvard University. At New York University Law School he was a member of the Law Review. He began his career at the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York. Mr. Goldberg is admitted to practice in both California and New York and has been admitted to practice in both jurisdictions since 1978.

Mr. Goldberg serves as a National Vice Chairman of the Zionist Organization of America and has represented various Jewish organizations and activists in civil rights matters.
